Warning
Salmonella poisoning in pets can be deadly. If you suspect your pet has salmonella poisoning, call your veterinarian.

Step 1: Examine your pet’s stool
Examine your pet’s stool. The number one symptom of salmonella poisoning in pets is diarrhea. If your pet has diarrhea or blood in their stool, they may have been exposed to salmonella.

Tip
Pets can transfer salmonella poisoning to their owners. Wash your hands with soap and water after contact with animal feces.

Step 2: Check for a fever

Tip
Ear thermometers for pets are available at most pet supply stores.

Step 3: Check the food bowl
Check your pet’s food bowl. If your pet is not eating a normal amount of food they could have salmonella poisoning. Loss of appetite is a common symptom.
